I’m passionate about fishing and bow hunting but adding them together, I was skeptical until I met Redbeard. Over the summer, I had the opportunity to be apart of a guided bowfishing excursion while visiting the Wisconsin Dells. I met Dennis, the owner of Redbeard Bowfishing Tours and who coincidentally had a red beard, and was instantly impressed. Dennis was our guide for the night and I felt as if I’ve known Dennis for years because it was just so easy to talk to him. I stepped on the pontoon style boat and was given a quick run-down of what to do and what not to do. It was still somewhat light out, so Dennis put us on some suckers so we could get some practice in before it was game on. Shortly after getting set up, Dennis called out “FISH.” I pulled my bow back for the first time, pointed the arrow in the fish’s direction, let the arrow rip, and after the large ripples of water settled I learned that I shot my first fish. After that, I felt as if four hours wasn’t going to be enough time, as I was having a blast. As the sunset drifted away, behind the large rock formations of the Upper Dells Wisconsin River, Dennis powered up his lights. Dennis explained that he runs his lights off of batteries vs a generator which causes vibrations that the fish can feel and get spooked. We continued fishing the rest of the night, talked to Dennis as if we were all high school buddies, and were given a tour/explained the history of the Wisconsin River. I highly recommend this experience for everyone and will be scheduling another Redbeard Bowfishing Tour next summer.
